CHARACTER
CHARACTER NAME: Carol Peletier
SERIES: The Walking Dead
CANON POINT: After the events of 02x07 when her daughter (as a zombie) gets shot by Rick.
LOSS: Memories of her husband Ed and her young daughter Sophia.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER:
Carol lived in the South with her husband and daughter before the apocalypse. She didn’t have a job but stayed at home to look after the daughter that her husband never paid much attention to as she was growing up. She has been a victim of physical and verbal abuse from her husband which has shattered her confidence and is reluctant to share this information with anyone. When the outbreak started they travelled to Atlanta, a supposed safe zone where they joined up with Shane, Lori and Carl.

Carol is quite a reserved, well-mannered and quiet person, quite the opposite to most of the people in the camp that she finds herself in. She is first and foremost a kind woman and will do anything and everything that she can to help people out in a difficult situation. She always tries to think of the positives of a situation and never gives up hope. However, when it comes to her husband Ed she can become very meek and helpless. She doesn’t tend to talk much when she’s around him, possibly scared that she’s going to say or do something wrong to set off his short temper. She is very protective of her young daughter Sophia and tries to protect her from all the horrors and dangers of this new world that they find themselves in.

In the early days of the camp she tends to sit apart from everyone else with her husband and daughter, not saying a word just staring into the embers of the fire in front of them. Her husband doesn’t seem to want to associate with any of the other members of the group. She does manage to talk to some of the other women in the camp though when they are left to do the laundry. Being a housewife she doesn’t mind this type of labour in the slightest although she does say the thing she misses the most about her life is her Maytag (and also her vibrator). While the women laugh and Carol enjoys bonding with them Ed comes over and tells them to keep working. One thing leads to another and he hits Carol. Shane beats him up badly for that telling him if he places a hand on any of the women in camp it’ll be worse next time. Carol seems completely distraught by these events and rushes over to her husband apologizing to him over and over again. It’s clear that Carol does love her husband but she’s more scared of him.

One night there’s an attack on the camp. Carol’s first priority is to protect her daughter. Ed gets bitten and she kills him herself before he gets the chance to turn into a zombie. After Ed’s death quite early on into the outbreak she becomes a lot more confident and brave in herself. She feels a lot more relaxed and no longer has to hold back and as a result she starts to become close to other members of the camp. Carol is also very religious and a devout Christian. She often prays for the well-being of herself, her daughter and the rest of the camp.

The camp gets attacked again and Rick and Carol’s daughter are forced into the forest. This is when she loses her daughter. She’s absolutely distraught as her daughter is everything to her. The camp search every day but find no trace of her. Carol never gives up hope though, believing that her daughter is still out there. It kills her to think that she’s out there all alone, calling for her. It’s now that she gets closer to Daryl. He never gives up on finding her daughter, even risking his own life to find her. She is more than grateful for this and the effort he goes to reassure her that her daughter’s still alive.

ABILITIES: Carol is just a human and doesn’t have any special abilities. Being a housewife she’s not exactly an expert in weaponry either but if it came down to it there’s no doubt that she could find a way to protect herself. She’s an intelligent woman!

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:
Carol sits on the steps of Hersel’s house, looking out to the farm. She was grateful that they’d found someone safe to stay, at least for now and she’s also grateful that Hersel was able to save Lori’s son. But there’s something stopping her from being completely content with this situation. The fact that her daughter is still out there all by herself is never far from her mind and rightly so. She looks up to the clear blue sky before closing her eyes and praying to the Lord that Sophia is safe and alive. She remains like that for a moment her eyes closed but opens them after a while.

Looking around the farm again she spots Lori and her son Carl together. The smallest of smiles ghosts over her lips as she remembers how Carl and her daughter would play together like they didn’t have a care in the world. It was better then, when their children didn’t realize how serious the situation was that they’re in. She looks away from them both and her eyes settle on the truck straight in front of her. Shane, Andrea, T-Dog, Rick and Daryl were crowded around a map of the area, guns in their hands. They’re planning another trip out to look for her daughter. She’s glad to see it but she knows that they’re not going to keep looking for much longer, they’ve spent too long on it already.

She just hopes that they can find her before they give up on her. She’s not foolish enough to think that she’ll be able to find her daughter herself. She’d end up doing more damage than good. She’d probably get herself killed and then when Sophia came back she wouldn’t have a mother or a father to look after her…not that Ed ever looked after her in the first place. But no, the hope is still there inside her. They’re going to find Sophia, they have to.

“Please, Lord. Please let today be the day that you bring her back to me.”

FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE:
[She pauses for a moment before starting to speak in her Southern accent]

I’m not sure where this place is but I have to say it’s a lot nicer than what I’m used to. I’ve been without luxuries for so long now it seems kind of surreal to have all of this available to me. I don’t even have to cook anymore; the food’s brought to me. I’ve been a housewife all my life and never realized how good it felt just to not have to clean or cook.

And there’s none of those walkers around here either. It’s so nice not to be scared all the time.

Thank you, Lord for delivering me to this place. I just hope that my friends are okay too….

INTENT:
Although at first inspection Carol might seem like quite a dull person she is a lot more complex than that. She has been through so much and she’s had to adapt to new situations quickly. I look forward to playing this side to her and seeing how she will adapt to this new environment. I’m looking forward to her making some new friends, she could always do with more of those.
